Migration Director will report to legislators

July 22, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Commission for the Control of Income and Public Expenditure of the Legislative Assembly called for the Director of Migration and Foreigners, Raquel Vargas, to give explanations on the implementation of a project that includes the electronic passport.

The head pf this institution was summoned on a date not yet defined after the legislators approved a motion promoted by Daniel Ulate, from the National Liberation Party (PLN).

According to Ulate, Vargas must be held accountable for authorizing unnecessary expenses in the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners with the electronic passport project, although the institution could take advantage of the installed capacity of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

He said that this entity has been offered the free service to store biometric data of a civil nature of all Costa Ricans and foreigners in border posts, through the TSE platform, but Vargas has rejected it.

Migration, according to the congressman, wants to start its own project -called Sicomi- which includes an electronic passport, possibly through a chip, reliable passenger facilitation system and biometrics.

The project involves an investment of approximately $15 million.

I am witness to the offer made by the TSE in open doors to provide this technology to Migration, first, as a pilot plan at any border post , without excluding Juan Santamaría International Airport, as it has developed with other institutions of the State,”

said Ulate.
