If you are a nature lover, the color of the birds and their flight, this is your kind of festival. The International Migratory Bird Festival took place over the weekend in Puerto Jiménez in Golfito.

It was not only about bird watching, but also about raising awareness on how plastic pollution affects birds.

According to experts, birds sometimes consume plastic because they mistake it for food or because they are drawn to the striking colors of plastic bags and lids mainly, which causes damage to their intestines, low weight, and even death.

Pollution by plastics has become a major threat to birds around the world. It is estimated that 8,300 million metric tons of plastic have been produced since its introduction in the 1950s,”

said Karen Leavelle, executive director of Osa Birds. The festival also planned outdoor family activities, including drawing competitions for children, workshops and photography, a bird photography contest, and a traditional bird marathon. The activity was organized by the Osa Conservation Area, Osa Birds and the Neotrópica Foundation.
