A report from the Ministry of Environment sent to the Constitutional Chamber requests the suspension of Executive Decree 39995 on the registration of pesticides in the country.
The institution believes this regulation “violates the precautionary principle” by exposing the population and the environment to pesticides that lack ecotoxitological studies.
The introduction of pesticides to Costa Rica must be regulated in a responsible manner. This decreed made the entry of pesticides more flexible and made us environmentally vulnerable because they are not being analyzed in the country. It gives us the grounds of unconstitutionality,”
commented Henry Picado, representative of the Costa Rican Federation for the Conservation of the Environment.
Picado, together with Fabián Pacheco, filed the writ of amparo against the “Regulation for the updating of information on the registration dossiers of active ingredients in pesticides.”
This decree has been strongly questioned by environmentalists and now the MINAE points out that the decree lacks technical support and that it is irresponsible to authorize the registration and entry of pesticides without them passing sanitary and environmental assessments.
