Minister Mata: “we had never had so many resources to fight drug trafficking”

January 31, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Security Minister Gustavo Mata declared in a conference that Costa Rica had never had so many resources to fight drug trafficking. He also announced that intelligence reports show an increase in the movement of drugs across the country, but the Public Force has been equipped as never before to attack drug gangs.

Mata said that authorities are already hiring 1,500 police officers. This is the result of a 25-billion budget that was given to the ministry of security.

In addition, he announced that the radar will cover 1,240 kilometers and they will use 2 sky-truck aircrafts that would arrive in September, as well as 3 helicopters.

In addition, authorities announced that it will adapt a King Air aircraft and 2 ships driven by 16 sailors each. Likewise, it will use 2 aircrafts donated by China and a new National Police Academy in Guapiles will be inaugurated.

National authorities received information from the Colombia international police: they informed that drug trafficking will increase over the next 12 months.

In addition, the National Guard expects to complete a cooperation project with Washington which would result in more than 16 vessels to monitor national waters.
