More than 100 seniors receive art classes

July 25, 2016 by Staff News Writer

During the 2012 Week of the Elderly, several senior citizens received art classes at the National Technical University (NTU) and they’ve been doing the same ever since.

Martha Rodríguez, an official in charge of Agape program said that they initially started with 10 seniors and now have more than 180.

We work with different lines, all that is comprehensive health: exercise, crafts, folk dancing, emotional intelligence courses to deal with grief and old age, there are music classes, computer classes, theater, literature, painting, urban agriculture, medicinal plants and even swimming lessons,”

said Rodríguez.

Tuition is every 2 months and the seniors choose the course they like.

It is a social action program and they only pay 500 colones for each course. The requirements to participate are being over 50 years old and having a student policy at the INS,”

added the official.

Accordin to Rodríguez,

the theater group has made presentations of abuse and violence against women and the elderly. We have works of social consciousness, music groups participating in graduations (…) We have seen gentlemen who enroll in wheelchairs and some time later they are taking dancing lessons (…) It’s more than classes, they create support groups and friendships.”
