Motorcycle owners haven’t paid the vehicle ownership tax

January 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

According to data provided by the National Insurance Institute (INS), more than a third of motorcycles registered in the country haven’t paid the vehicle ownership tax.

According to the institution, about 103,000 (35% of the total) still owed the right of movement for 2017.

The delinquency of motorcycles even doubles the total, which is around 17%, as explained by Róger Arias, head of the Directorate of Solidarity of the INS.

The tax is composed of several items, which include the property tax (it depends on the characteristics of each vehicle, such as brand, model, etc.); Compulsory Automobile Insurance (SOA), infractions and contributions to several institutions.

Based on data from the General Superintendence of Insurance (SUGESE), for the years 2014 and 2015, the number of insured motorcycles represented less than 20% of the total vehicles that paid the policy.

However, during the same years, 50% of traffic accidents that were covered by the SOA corresponded to incidents in which a motorcycle was involved.
