National Restoration asks the government to reinforce borders due to crisis in Nicaragua

July 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

During the celebrations for the annexation of the Party of Nicoya to Costa Rica, the National Restoration Party asked the government to reinforce the borders, especially with Nicaragua, due to the imminent migration crisis that will affect the country.

Carlos Avendaño, head of the National Restoration Party, stated that the government should reinforce immigration controls, especially at the border crossings, which lead to the illegal arrival of thousands of Nicaraguans.

Therefore, it will also ask the legislative Board and the other heads of fractions to convene an urgent meeting with the heads of the Executive Branch to discuss this issue, in order to promote joint actions.

The migration crisis is in our doors. If we do not do something strong, we will have similar or worse consequences than that of the crisis of the 1980s,”

said Avendaño.

The legislator also said that the Executive should ask for help from other countries to send medical assistance and supplies, given that the shelters will not have enough.

However, Avendaño’s concern contrasts with the official figures for Nicaraguans in shelters. The General Directorate of Migration and Immigration reported a decrease in the number of people fleeing the humanitarian and political crisis in that country in the two shelters that the government set up last week in La Cruz de Guanacaste and Golfito, in Puntarenas.

While last week the government reported 60 immigrants in these aid centers, only 10 remained on Monday.

Despite this, Avendaño believes that

a bomb is exploding in our faces and the government seems not to notice. What happens with the immigrant wave is worse than the fiscal situation and taking selfies here in Guanacaste won’t fix it,”

complained the legislator.
