National Theater will expose its historical secrets to the public

July 1, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Perhaps many have heard that the floor of the National Theater can be raised or lowered thanks to an iconic screw system with no end, but how many have actually seen it? That’s what the administration of the National Theater wants to show people by opening the areas normally hidden from the public in the building declared a National Heritage Symbol.

The endless screw moves thanks to the push of a dozen people. It should be given more than a hundred laps and in each one of them, pressure is exerted on the metal beams that hold the bezel, until it is placed on the same level as the stage. This occurs only on special occasions (official visits or presidential acts), or only once a year as part of maintenance works.

Fred Herrera, director of the site, told CRHoy that the plan is to create a campaign to “democratize” access to the National Theater, including visiting areas that have been closed for many years to the general public.

Part of the tour will include a visit to the stage, another item of great historical importance within the National Theater. The stage has a system of strings and wood that holds the curtains and elements on the stage and allows you to move them manually.
