Neighbors of Desamparados already resent impact of water shortage due to drought

March 20, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The lack of water due to the conditions of the dry season already has an impact on Desamparados.

As reported on Tuesday the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA), in that canton located south of the capital projects two cuts in the supply of drinking water service with direct impact on at least 10 thousand people during this day.

The institution warned of a shortage between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm in downtown Desamparados due to the deficit in water production and the increase in demand. There is an impact on somefive5 thousand people.

Similarly, that same number of people will have problems with the service at the Jericho center in San Miguel de Desamparados at the same time: from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As announced by the AyA last February, in the worst of scenarios, the shortage of water would affect some 500 thousand people throughout the national territory. This data, translated into 30% of the total water sources, is no small thing. Rather, it supposes the grayest panorama of the last years.

The institute points out that the lack of rain, supported by the effects of El Niño phenomenon, would spread aggressively during the first half of the year in a large part of the country.

For the AyA, the current horizon is much more negative than that of three years ago, when drought and shortages caused crises in communities of the Central Valley and the province of Guanacaste.
