New government hasn’t solved issue of BCR board of directors

May 31, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The new authorities of the government of President Carlos Alvarado still haven’t made a final decision on the board of directors of the Bank of Costa Rica (BCR), which keeps this institution with two people appointed for the same position in three different cases.

Shirley González Mora was appointed during the suspension of Paola Mora; Adriana Céspedes, who takes the place of Monica Segnini; and Javier Herrera, who takes over after Francisco Molina. All three were suspended after they reported irregularities with the credit known as “cementazo”.

According to the Minister of the Presidency, Rodolfo Piza, the duplicity in the appointment will be maintained until there is a final resolution on suspended directors. In these cases, the original appointments have not expired.

However, on Thursday the extraordinary Governing Council appointed the accountant Marcia Montes, the economist Julio César Espinoza, and the business administrator Néstor Solís as the new directors of the state bank.

These people come to fill the vacancies left by lawyer Alberto Raven lawyer and former legislator Evita Arguedas, assigned from the Government of the president Laura Chinchilla, as well as former legislator Gustavo Arias.

At the beginning of the week, the rating agency Fitch Ratings reported that it kept the negative outlook in the feasibility score of the BCR, considering that it still does not resolve its corporate governance problem.

In the case of the National Bank, the Governing Council appointed four seats on the board of directors that were also vacant this Thursday.

Marvin Arias, who was already on the board of directors of Banco Popular, Mahity Flores, accountant who served as financial director of Correos de Costa Rica, and Rodolfo González, public relations officer, who served as secretary of the board of directors of Banco Nacional.

This bank was also in the public eye due to a continuous confrontation of its directors during the last four years. During that time, they accused each other of lack of suitability for the positions.
