Nicaragua has already paid Costa Rica for damage to Isla Portillo

March 13, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On March 7th, the government of Nicaragua transferred the money for economic compensation due to the environmental damage caused in Isla Portillos after the military occupation in that sector in 2010.

The General Chancellery of the Republic informed that the Nicaraguan government made the transfer for the amount of $378,890.59 to the Costa Rican account. That amount was ruled by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, following the resolution given on February 2nd.

On March 9th, Nicaragua informed about the transfer made through a diplomatic note of the Foreign Minister of that country, Denis Moncada Colindres.

Costa Rica had requested just over $6 million. However, the Court believes that the country failed in its arguments and did not demonstrate the environmental damage that was worth that economic amount.

We have verified that the amount was duly accredited, so we are pleased that the Government of Nicaragua has fulfilled its obligation towards Costa Rica, as ordered by the International Court of Justice. Actions like this help both countries gradually build a better relationship, for the benefit of their people, “

said Foreign Minister Manuel González.

According to the data provided by the Foreign Ministry, Costa Rica spent $6.5 million for the proceedings against Nicaragua in the International Court of Justice.
