Gymnasiums full of food, billions of colones collected by companies and institutions and hundreds of Costa Ricans from across the country who are helping the affected areas are just some of the consequences of hurricane Otto.
November was a tragic month for the country but people witnessed the sense of solidarity and humanity that runs through Costa Rican provinces.
According to Jim Batres, deputy director of the Department of Risk Management and Prevention of the Red Cross, the humanitarian aid received during the last days of November, when Hurricane hit Costa Rica, hadn’t been seen since 1988, when Hurricane Juana indirectly affected the national territory.
The Costa Rican Red Cross received donations up to ¢ 822,641,601.58 dollars and colones. They were made through their bank accounts.
In addition, thanks to the help, the institution was able to deliver 30,000 food-and-hygiene “kits”.
The billions raised through the Red Cross will now be deposited to the National Emergency Commission (CNE), which is in charge of managing the funds.
