OAS fails to reach decision on crisis in Venezuela

June 19, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The OAS chancellors failed once again to agree on a statement on the political crisis that has shaken Venezuela, with 80 days of opposition protests resulting in 74 dead people so far.

At a meeting in Cancun, Mexico, on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the organization, the foreign ministers put a new text that they had discussed at noon to the vote, but failed to gather the 23 required votes: there were 20 votes in favor, eight abstentions and five votes against.

The session was held in absence of Venezuela, whose chancellor, Delcy Rodríguez, withdrew in protest.

The election of the Constituent Assembly is scheduled for the end of July, and the Venezuelan opposition announced that it will not participate in the process.
