OIJ agent says kidney removal victim “looked like he had two stomachs”

September 14, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) agent who investigated the human trafficking case for the purpose of illicit extraction of organs, said some of the victims they were able to locate had poor health conditions after the surgery.

According to the agent, a victim from Cartago

looked like he had two stomachs.”

He even had a gauze they did not remove after the surgery.

The Public Ministry assured that the victims lost 25% of organic and renal functionality.

They would have received between three and 10 million colones in exchange for extracting the kidneys, which apparently were transplanted to foreigners who came to the country to receive them in private medical centers.

In this case, the Prosecutor’s Office accuses the former head of nephrology at the Hospital Calderón Guardia (HCG), named Mora Palma.

The doctor is accused along with three other surgeons named Mauro Stamati, Fonseca Guzmán and Monge Monge and a foreign merchant, owner of a pizza place, named Katsigiannis Karkasi.
