OIJ captures former Venezuelan governor suspected of kidnap and torture

July 24, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Miscellaneous Crimes section of the Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed the capture of Eduardo Manuitt Carpio, a former Venezuelan governor of Guárico State, for the crimes of kidnap, threats, coercion and torture.

The director of the judicial police, Wálter Espinoza, confirmed that his son and a brother were arrested next to the man, identified as Carlos Manuitt Morao and Alberto Martínez Camero, respectively.

The investigation arose in April, when foreigners filed a complaint with the OIJ because they were robbed of five cattle in Coronado. Hours later, the Venezuelans carried out actions on farms adjacent to theirs, where they threatened the inhabitants with firearms to obtain information.

There are reports that some of the offended people were held for 15, 6, 3 hours, being tortured and threatened with weapons,”

Espinoza explained.

Two Costa Ricans identified as José Francisco Villalobos Montero and Juan Aguilar Aguirre were arrested along with Venezuelans.

The judicial authorities informed that the former Venezuelan governor Eduardo Manuitt has been living in Costa Rica for five years, and he’s engaged in business activities related to livestock.

An apparent false passport with the same name but from El Salvador was found in his house, so now information is being extended to contribute to the investigation. In the raids made in Coronado, firearms, four vehicles and documents related to the crime for which they went to the Judicial Investigation Agency were seized.
