Ombudsman calls for head of OIJ Director

January 31, 2014 by Staff News Writer

Diario Extra

On Wednesday, the National Ombudsman (Defensoría de los Habitantes) wrote a letter to judiciary, calling for the suspension of Francisco Segura, as director of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ). The move comes as part of the review into a judicial investigation of a journalist and resulted in the warrentless search of cell phone records. In the letter, the Ombudsman pointed out discrepancies in the statements given by Segura and Celso Gamboa, who is vice minister of security. The Ombudsman is also taking the position that any review would be comprised if the current director is allowed to remain in charge.
