Operations in pineapple farm stopped due to possible environmental damage

The National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA) issued a precautionary measure to stop pineapple sowing in a farm located in Los Chiles de Alajuela due to possible environmental damage.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), Finca Nidia Project, owned by the company Finca Joselyn S.A. is being accused of the damages.

The developer invaded two protection areas, made a wetland fill and failed to control the environmental monitoring and apply the tools established by the secretariat,”

confirmed the MINAE.

The analyzes are based on SETENA and the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC). In addition, there were non-compliances with the relevant guidelines for environmental viability.

According to SETENA, the maintenance of the plantation will be conducted until its harvest and then the plantation will not be able to carry out new work of preparation and sowing of the areas already harvested.

Instructions to the developer:

-Maintaining harvested and non-harvested areas.
-Depositing the economic amount for environmental guarantee: 17.8 million colones.
-Presenting tests of discharge in a month, to allow to lift the preventive measures.
-Having a book of minutes to enable it as a logbook.
-Performing a new inspection in the company of the Water Directorate and SINAC.
