Parque Ecológico is looking for an administrator

October 18, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) is looking for an administrator for the old INBioparque, known today as Parque Ecológico.

The efforts began a year ago and to date, the entity provides two options for granting this property: by contract or by tender.

We are measuring the possibility of a public contract with a government institution, in this case, it would be a foundation. If this doesn’t happen, we will post a bidding paper,

explained Laura Brenes, representative from SINAC in the old INBioparque.

Brenes added that they have talked with several groups to be in charge of the environmental, education center, such as FUNDECOR and the National Parks Foundation, but the Foundation from the University of Costa Rica for Research (FUNDEVI) is the one with more experience and a capacity.

According to the official, one of the reasons for the one-year delay in the appointment of an administrator is that some of the organizations, consulted as potential candidates, have changed board and this produces a setback in the negotiations.

However, Brenes also indicated that the SINAC has no deadline to publish the bidding paper.

We are currently negociating with FUNDEVI and, if for any reason, they tell us they are not avaible to do so, we will publish the bidding paper, which we have done,

stated Brenes.

SINAC want to keep the park open to the public and provide environmental education, just as INBioparque did. Nevertheless, since December 15th, 2016, date in which the permits expired, the park has been closed.

We keep it closed to the public, because SINAC does not have the necessary staff to run a place like this. Over 20 people are needed,

concluded Brenes.
