Personal trainer denounces sexual harassment by former president Óscar Arias

February 15, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Patricia Volio, a personal trainer, said in her social networks that she was sexually harassed by former President Óscar Arias. She’s the 10th woman to make this kind of statement about the former president.

Volio wrote on her Facebook wall that after a lot of thinking she decided to go public, even though a lot of people know about it because she told them at the time it happened.

I will make it public on social networks to support each other. About 15 to 17 years ago… I also suffered sexual harassment by Óscar Arias Sánchez.”

Volio explained that she was a personal trainer for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I had to go to his house where he has a personal space/gym. After several sessions, he harassed me with groping and verbal innuendo that bothered me and made me uncomfortable. I let him know this and he ignored it until I decided NOT to offer my professional services as a personal trainer anymore,”

wrote the woman.

The personal trainer commented that she told Arias that

This is where this ends. Don’t pay what you owe me. I don’t need it. I closed the door before the eyes of the butler who looked at me like… oh, oh, another one. I thought about my family, I thought about my physical and emotional integrity. I did not speak publicly before and people know why.”

The former president was investigated on Wednesday in the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office of Gender, in the First Judicial Circuit of San José, due to two formal complaints against him.
