Petition to remove crocodile that attacked tourist from Tamarindo

October 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Chamber of Commerce and Tourism from Tamarindo (CCTT) requested an injunction against Tempisque Conservation Area (ACT) and the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) to capture and relocate the crocodile that attacked an American tourist last July 22nd.

The attack caused the Colorado native to lose his right leg. The victim was identified as Jonathan Arthur Cker, 59, who took surfing lessons in the estuary.

According to the complaint filed by attorney Walter Brenes, from the firm Energy Law, 3 months have passed and no measures to relocate the animal have been taken.

Apparently, the crocodile frequently roams in the tideland and the community claims they do not want an unfortunate tragedy to happen again.

The legal complaint seeks to ensure the right to a healthy and balanced environment with tourist activities that take place in the beach from Guanacaste. According to the complaint, such events affect tourism businesses.

This claim comes at a time when the MINAE argues there are no technical underpinnings to talk about a crocodile overpopulation.
