Plogging: Getting fit while helping the environment

September 24, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A group of women who call themselves Running Chics put on their sports clothes and go running through different streets of the Greater Metropolitan Area but, in addition to exercising, they help the environment.

This is a trend called “Plogging;” people go running or walking and -while they are at it- pick up trash from the environment. It emerged in Sweden in 2016 and has become very popular in different parts of the world.

We plogged all week. The Running Chics of the East and West were collecting garbage and we realized the amount of waste there is in the streets. What we found the most were cigarettes, but also plastic, a lot of garbage that cannot be recycled, as well as glass, cans, paper and cardboard,”

said the women on their social networks.

The group, made up of women between 20 and 65 years of age, dressed in green and divided into groups to cover more sites and collect more waste.

In addition to contributing to the environment, this group of women are athletics instructors of young people at social risk who receive formal education at the Sor Maria Romero Institute.
