Pneumococcus vaccine will arrive in July

June 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

In July, the Caja Costarricense del seguro Social (CCSS) will furnish Costa Rican hospitals and clinics with 30.000 pneumococcus vaccines. The institution invested 4.000.000 colones.

Pneumococcus is a bacteria that produces severe infections and pneumonia. Its impact on children under 5 years old can be very serious and it can even lead to meningitis.

According to doctor Isabel Fernández, from the epidemiology department of the CCSS, the vaccine is aimed to adults and people with chronic conditions.

She also stated that the influenza vaccine campaign will finish next week. The measure was extended for another week since diabetic and heart disease patients hadn’t been immunized.
