Political violence against women will be punished with jail

March 15, 2017 by Staff News Writer

A bill proposes to punish political violence against women with imprisonment.

The initiative, presented by Maureen Clarke, legislator from the National Liberation Party (PLN), aims to prevent political violence against women, including political harassment, to protect them.

It also seeks to sanction individual or collective acts that limit or prevent women from enjoying and exercising their right to political participation, as well as the full exercise of their citizenship.

According to the text, whoever kills a woman for the exercise of her political rights would be punished with up to 35 years in prison, and serious attacks against a female politician would be punished with up to 2 years in prison.

Other penalties would also be sanctions for those who commit crimes of psychological harassment, restriction on self-determination, threats and property damage against female politicians.
