February 23, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Committee on International Relations and Foreign Trade of the Legislative Assembly ruled in favor of a loan between Costa Rica and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to finance the Border Integration Program to improve infrastructure and strengthening controls.

The institutions that will benefit from this investment are the National Customs Service, the General Directorate of Migration, the State Phytosanitary Service, the National Animal Health Service and the Ministries of Health and Public Safety.

Legislator Danny Hayling, from the National Liberation Party (PLN), said the endorsement of the contract is a step further towards regional integration.

Other benefits are to have the right tools for greater coordination and increased safety for users.

The Integration Program includes the following components:
– Investments in infrastructure and equipment at border crossings Las Tablillas, PeƱas Blancas, Paso Canoas and Sixaola.
-Construction of new infrastructure, implementation of potable water and sanitation, electrical and telecommunications systems.
-Modern customs controls.

The program will cost $ 100 million.
