Proposal for the first urban national park in Desamparados reaches the Legislative Assembly

December 26, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Maureen Fallas, from the National Liberation Party (PLN), proposed creating the first urban national park, which would be located in Loma de Salitral, in Desamparados.

The legislator presented a bill that would innovate conservation policies in two aspects: The first is the possibility of creating protected areas within cities, and the second is to introduce an administration and financing scheme based on an alliance between the central government, municipalities and companies.

This would allow the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) to maintain its stewardship over conservation areas with the support of local governments, communities and companies in the administration and payment scheme of expropriations.

The park would be called La Loma de Salitral, an area that, according to a 2009 study by the National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio), is the last remaining premontane forest in the metropolitan area and has a great water wealth and a rich ecosystem.
