Prosecution requests Arias to be banned from leaving the country

February 22, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested, through an appeal, that the impediment to exit the country against former President Óscar Arias Sánchez be issued as a precautionary measure.

This was confirmed by the Attorney General of the Republic, Emilia Navas Aparicio, who expressed she is waiting for the date of the appeal hearing and request the precautionary measure again in order to avoid any escape attempt.

Arias has been criminally charged for an alleged rape and an alleged sexual abuse against an adult. In addition, at least eight other women have reported being victims of alleged harassment and abuse by the former President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Navas explained that after the first complaint, the Court rejected the request for precautionary measures.

Arias was brought in for questioning on February 13th in the First Judicial Circuit. Even his lawyers pointed out that he voluntarily handed over his passport.
