Protesters interrupted President’s speech on Environment Day

June 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

CRH

Two young environmentalists used the occasion of President Luis Guillermo Solís’ speech in a World Environment Day event to express their dissatisfaction with the ‘pineapple expansion’.

A series of images facilitated by the Conservation Federation of Costa Rica (FECON) show the moment when the protesters break into the room and stand in front of the stage in Antigua Aduana, San José.

With this action it is clear that we cannot celebrate the environment when the government does not fulfill its word of establishing a moratorium on the expansion of the crop,”

said Álvarez.

For the National Chamber of Producers and Exporters of Pineapple (CANAPEP), the study that indicates a large loss of forests because of the ‘expansion’ of the crop is inaccurate.

The analysis of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) document entitled ‘Monitoring of Change in the Use of Productive Landscapes’ (Mocupp) pointed out that between 2000 and 2015, pineapple activity ‘consumed’ 5,566 hectares of forest ground.

Let the boys be there,”

said President Luis Guillermo Solís, when protesters interrupted his speech.
