RCB asked the UCR to cancel talk on glyphosate

June 5, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Biodiversity Coordination Network (RCB), made up of ecologists, teachers, students and farmers, requires the authorities of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) to cancel a talk scheduled for June 5th to defend the use of glyphosate, despite the scientific criteria on its link with cancer.

This group made an “open letter” to the School of Biology of the UCR, where they also demand to stop promoting activities in favor of the herbicide.

“Science behind glyphosate” is the talk to which these citizens refer, which would take place this Wednesday -World Environment Day- in Auditorium 290, School of Biology at the UCR headquarters.

There is convincing evidence that glyphosate can cause cancer in laboratory animals and there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). It also causes damage to the DNA and chromosomes of human cells”

states the letter, quoting the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (OMS).

Not only do they disagree with this talk, they also reproach that the use of the name of the University of Costa Rica to promote the questioned glyphosate herbicide of the Bayer company.

It is no accident that in the last 9 months Bayer has been convicted in US courts three times to pay billions of dollars in lawsuits filed by people whose health has been affected by this herbicide: in August 2018 $78 million, in March 2019 $80 million, and last May $2000 million,”

cites the RCB document.

In addition to the open letter and several publications on social networks, the RCB collects signatures to support their request. Those who wish to support this initiative can send an email at: red.biodiversidad.cr@gmail.com
