RECOPE buys $2 million fire extinguishing unit

September 25, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) reported on Monday it recently acquired a fire extinguishing unit at a cost of $2,125,000, more than ¢1,230 million.

The new machinery will be used in the Moín Plant, in the province of Limón, which has an installed storage capacity of three million barrels of fuel.

It is an industrial equipment and it is used to extinguish fires in storage areas and hydrocarbon operations.

According to RECOPE, it is attached to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) of the United States, which states the requirements for this type of vehicle intended to address a major emergency such as the ones that occur in the oil industry.

The unit has a 23-meter-high arm and in the upper part a water lance with the capacity to expel 5,000 gallons per minute, which allows the agent to reach the center of the tank, where it is more efficient for the extinguishing work in case of fire.

It also has an automatic diagnostic system that allows to verify that all the devices are working or operating correctly.

It was acquired in order to replace other units and at the same time significantly increase the capacity of response to the increased risk generated by the increase of tanks in the storage area of the Moín Plant, the largest in the country.

The Moin Squad brigade is trained for intervention during crisis situations.
