Recope pipeline was vandalized to steal diesel

October 29, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The pipeline of the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (Recope) was broken in Matina, on the way to Limón, apparently to steal diesel from it.

Guillermo Montoya, from the Fire Department of Costa Rica, reported that the fuel spill was caused by vandalism.

He explained that aquifers were not affected and that they proceeded to make containment dikes to prevent the fuel from expanding.

In addition, Recope stopped pumping while the staff worked on the repair of the leak.
