Repairing damages caused by Otto will take 5 years

March 2, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The repair works to start correct the damages caused by Hurricane Otto have already begun. But there is still a long way to go. The plan approved by the Government and the Board of the National Emergency Commission (CNE) establishes a period of 5 years to run the 945 interventions that complete the plan.

So far, the government has ¢27 billion of ¢130 billion needed to implement these actions, only 21% of what is required.

So far there are 103 projects identified as “priority”. More than 15 billion colones have been invested for these projects, and their execution would take place during the current administration.

These projects include the construction of roads, bridges, fords and culverts, representing the biggest economic investment.

The document also states that the proper use of resources will be monitored by the Office of the Comptroller General, the Audit Firm Deloitte, and the CNE.

Almost ¢2 billion of the resources the Government has are donations made through Teletón, the Costa Rican Red Cross, the Bank of Costa Rica and Caritas.

Other ¢5 billion were donated by the UAE and almost ¢18 billion were obtained through a World Bank loan.

There are a number of ongoing resource requests (to other countries) in progress, some of which are already well underway. I won’t disclose which countries and under what conditions,”

said President Luis Guillermo Solís.

Up to this point, about ¢ 5 billion have been invested, while another ¢ 2 billion will be invested in 11 different projects this month.
