Scams increase during Christmas

December 21, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Attorney General of the Republic warns the population that during this period there is an increase in frauds and scams.

The payment of the bonus, the vacation periods, and sales linked to the World Cup cause a greater movement of purchases and many take advantage to commit a crime.

The mechanisms used by fraudsters have been changing throughout history (…) everything that has to do with internet sales is now widely used,”

said José Pablo Miranda, fiscal coordinator of the Attorney General’s Office.

Miranda gave a series of tips so that these holidays are not ruined:

• Be patient when analyzing promotions and offers.
• In case of tour packages, call hotels and airlines to confirm the reservations that are being offered, whether it is in national territory or abroad.
• If you are going to pay in quotas, remember that for this modality businesses must have a permit from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce. Call and confirm that they have this requirement.
• If you are going to buy a property, check its history in the Land Registry.
• Do not accept payments through checks, because although there is a code to confirm the transaction, the payment may not have been made.
• Don’t provide sensitive information via telephone, much less the one related to your payment methods.
• Warn vulnerable populations with the methods that scammers use to commit their crimes.
