Scientists explain the foam that appeared in Poás volcano

September 24, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The foam that appeared after the volcanic eruption in Poás was explained scientifically.

The whitish foam turned out to be extremely acidic and very rich in salts (hypersaline) according to the first results of the Ovsicori and analysis still in progress, comes from the exhalation activity (activity of gases and volcanic aerosols) and minor eruptions of the lake that’s almost dry, but rich in salts and hyperacid waters.

That foam is possibly an emulsion, that is, the mixture of two immiscible liquids (a property of some liquids, solids and gases that are not capable of forming a homogeneous phase), which would be two phases with sizes smaller than 0.01 mm; an example of an emulsion is oil and water,”

explained an expert in volcanology.

The remains of acid foam were spotted in the area of the viewpoint of the crater and it is the first time it is observed; The substance looks similar to the foam produced by soap.
