Seismic swarm detected in Cartago and Orosí

February 22, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A seismic swarm located between the south Cartago and the west Orosi de Paraíso is being investigated by geologists from the National Seismological Network (RSN).

Between February 19th and 20th, 11 movements of different magnitude were registered in that site. According to the report, the earthquakes have oscillated between 1.8 and 3.5 degrees with depths of up to six kilometers.

The majority of these earthquakes have been perceived by the population due to their proximity to population centers,”

RSN reported.

In the zone where the earthquakes were reported, there are two tectonic faults: Aguacaliente and Navarro, which make seismic movements very frequent.

The last major earthquakes in this area were those that occurred in May 1910 near Cartago and in August 1951 near Paraíso,”

added the RSN.
