SENASA detected a buffalo with paralytic rabies

September 8, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The National Animal Health Service (SENASA) detected a buffalo with paralytic rabies on a farm in Coto Brus, Puntarenas. Despite being a single case, it drew the attention of the authorities, because it is the first case in these animals.

It took place in La Bruja village, 5 kilometers away from the farm where the third outbreak was reported in August. At that moment, security measures were applied in animals and villagers: 800 bovines were vaccinated in 11 farms.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Among the symptoms, this disease causes incoordination, walking difficulty, salivation, leg paralysis, injuries to the neck muscles and it can be fatal.

Due to these outbreaks, it is recommended:

-To avoid contact with sick animals that have nervous symptoms.
-To bury animal carcasses.
-to vaccinate animals.
-To report any suspected cases.
