Signature request to encourage labeling of GMOs

March 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

A group of Costa Ricans opposing Genetically Modified Organisms, led by Jaime García, say that the government is failing to fulfill its campaign promises, as a decree to regulate the labeling of these products has not yet been enacted.

On Wednesday, the group used the opportunity of the celebration of the World Consumer Rights Day, to remind President Solís of his written promise that, starting on May 9th, 2014, he would “elaborate and approve a regulation to carry out the labeling on food for human or animal consumption if they contain genetically modified ingredients,” a promise that almost 3 years later, remains unfulfilled.

Since May 2015, the citizens’ group has decided not to leave the topic in oblivion and, on a monthly basis, collects and takes signatures to the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC), responsible for promulgating the decree.

To date they count about 25 thousand collected and delivered signatures, but they aim for more.

As long as President Solís fails to keep his word, we will continue to denounce this non-compliance through the collection of signatures in the National Campaign ‘GMO Labelling Now!’, started in 2015,

said the group.

They are looking for more people to join the initiative and sign, physically or virtually, by entering here.
