SINAC on alert to avoid lagarteada this Friday

March 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) has the surveillance operation ready to prevent the lagarteada from occurring in Ortega sector, in Santa Cruz de Guanacaste.

Public Force, Traffic Police and Municipal Police, along with SINAC employees will be alert to any attempt to capture a crocodile, since the institution denied permission for the activity to take place after last year’s crocodile died while it was trapped. The Integral Development Association of Ortega filed the appeal, which was also rejected.

Although there are no permits for the activity, there have been some complaints that neighbors or people in the area want to capture and display the animal to maintain the tradition.

One of them is Daniel Dinarte, whom they pointed out through some photographs on his Facebook site where he stated they had already identified the crocodile they were going to catch.

According to SINAC, they have been working with the Development Association to generate other activities to replace the lagarteada.
