Social movement arises in Limón and this is what it asks

March 19, 2019 by Staff News Writer

A social organization was created in the province of Limón to face the problems that affect the area. This Monday, it delivered a document to the Executive Branch with three specific requests to apply immediately.

The Social Movement Por y Para Limón is made up of unions, business and commercial groups of the province, who joined forces after the recent closures of companies by virtue of the entry into operation of the Container Terminal of Moín (TCM) operated by APM Terminals.

What do they ask?

-That an exception decree be issued to address what they qualify as an emergency before the operational closure of companies (such as Dole or Chiquita Brands) and the lack of jobs. For example, that a subsidy be considered for the unemployed.
-That the Executive Power develops proposals for the immediate creation of jobs.
-That the legality of the Port Administration and Economic Development Board of the Atlantic Coast (Japdeva) be respected in its struggle with the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) to be recognized as the national port authority.

Antonio Wells, general secretary of the Japdeva Syndicate (Sintrajap), a group that makes up the social movement, said they want to put proposals on the table before talking about a strike. However, with the existing horizon, no measure is ruled out.

We ask that scholarships be given so that the children of people who do not have a salary continue studying and that there is a subsidy for those who are losing their jobs. Also, that the Law of Japdeva and the contract of the TCM with the loads that were negotiated be respected. That would stop the social chaos and drama in Limón.”
