Solís: “Nicaragua has to pay for the enviromental damage”

November 18, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica’s President Luis Guillermo Solís declared that it was unacceptable that Nicaragua refuses to pay a 6-million-colón compensation for environmental damages as ordered by the International Court of (ICJ) .

Costa Rica’s compensation includes damages caused by Nicaraguan agents, who broke pipes and cut down trees from forests located in Calero island (known by Nicaraguans as Portillo island), an internationally-protected wetland by the Ramsar Convention.

If the debt is not paid, it would be a horrible Nicaragua’s gesture and it proves once again that the country does not respect the international law. I do not see that any other alternative; they have to pay,

stated Solis.

The ICJ, located in The Hague, Netherlands, declared that Costa Rica has sovereignty over the small territory that Nicaragua claimed as their own.

The ruling by the International Court indicated that Nicaragua is responsible for the environmental damage in the east border between both countries and it must compensate Costa Rica.
