Spanish Foreign Ministry congratulated Costa Rica

July 26, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Spanish Foreign Ministry congratulated Costa Rica for nominating Christiana Figueres to the General Secretariat of the UN.

It was expressed by Minister José Manuel García Margallo to his Costa Rican counterpart Manuel González.

García said that the candidate represents Costa Rica’s strengths in its commitment to multilateralism and defense of the environment.

Spain is not a permanent member of the Security Council but it is one out of the 15 countries that are involved in the voting process and to have its support could greatly benefit Costa Rican candidate.

Ibañez Ignacio Rubio, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Eguidazu Fernando Palacios, Secretary of State for the European Union and Jesús García Aldaz, Secretary of State for Cooperation also attended the meeting.

Besides Christiana Figueres’ candidacy, they talked about the excellent economic and political relations between Spain and Costa Rica and they wish to strengthen them even more. In addition, several issues on regional scenarios were discussed, including the XXV Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America to be held on October 28th and October 29th in Cartagena de Indias.
