Strawberry producers suffer heavy losses due to strong winds

January 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Strawberry producers in the area of Vara Blanca reported heavy losses after the strong winds that hit the country.

Gusts accompanied by rain virtually destroyed greenhouses of approximately 20 hectares and now the owners are trying to cover the production with the intention of saving the strawberries.

The greenhouses are built of metal tubes and plastics, but most did not resist the gusts.

There is a lot of disaster, most of us lost the greenhouses. If this is not covered in three days, the entire crop will be lost because strawberries are very sensitive to water,”

said Edgar González, who has been devoted to strawberry production for more than 25 years.

Rubén Morera, another producer in the area, explained that the production is currently low, so most farmers do not have the resources to raise the greenhouses again and cover the fruits to save them from fungi.
