Students from the UCR prepare unique prosthesis

April 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A group of scientists from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) are working on the development of a unique prosthesis that would allow people to grab objects by means of image recognition.

The robotic hand called “Handy” is a 2017 initiative to collaborate with patients who have suffered hand amputation.

We are working on creating the first autonomous prosthesis in the world where image recognition is used to adapt to each object and perform the right type of grip,”

explained Dr. Allan Orozco.

The prosthesis uses special software that allows the patient to “train” the prosthesis and the images are saved in real time.

This project has been in charge of the national scientists of the UCR Carlos Luis Hernandez Rodriguez, Angie Marín Acuña, Bryan Alexis Barquero Fallas and the Brazilian Eric Rohmer. Experts say that 3D printing technology reduces the cost of the prosthesis.

Currently, the prosthesis has a reduced number of functions, but with this project it is sought to reach 13 different types of grip.

This project of the School of Industrial Engineering is a sample of the cyber-evolution 4.0 that covers the biomedical area in the country.
