Suspicious deaths from methanol consumption rise to 25

The number of suspicious deaths from the consumption of alcohol adulterated with methanol has increased to 25. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Health on Monday afternoon. The deaths occurred in Santa Bárbara de Heredia and Santa Cruz, Guanacaste.

In total, 59 patients have been hospitalized for methanol poisoning, of which 25 have died, according to data from the Health Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health.

Rodrigo Marín, director of surveillance of the Ministry of Health, indicated that 19 of the deaths correspond to men and six women, between 32 to 72 years old.

To date, more than 55 thousand containers of alcoholic beverages have been seized and ten stores were closed.

The adulterated brands are: “Guaro Montano”, “Guaro Chonete”, “Guaro Cuerazo”, “Guaro Sacheto”, “Guaro Gran Apache”, “Red Star Brandy”, “Baron Red Brandy”, “Timbuka Brandy” and “Brandy Molotov”.
