Tax exemption for electric vehicles might be approved in December

October 29, 2017 by Staff News Writer

According to Marcela Guerrero, from Citizen Action Party (PAC), the bill that seeks to exonerate electric vehicles from some taxes could be approved in first reading in December, in order to encourage the use of said vehicles.

The statements were made during the inauguration of the third electrolinera (charging station) located in the province of Heredia, which was inaugurated this Friday in Torres de Heredia. It is preceded by the one located in Mall Paseo de las Flores and the energy plant of the Public Services Company of Heredia (ESPH).

The law is establishing everything that has to do with electric cars as public interest, that is, from bicycles, motorcycles, vehicles, freight vehicles and public transportation,”

said Guerrero.

If this bill is approved, it would come into force in 2018 in order to exempt this type of vehicles from taxes for five years. They would also have benefits for the payment of the circulation permit. In addition, the parts and spare parts of these cars would be exonerated for up to 10 years.

ESPH indicated that with ¢2,000 and a charging time of three hours, an electric car could cover a distance of nearly 250 kilometers, whereas with gasoline the cost for the same trip would be ¢15,000.
