Tech recycling campaign seeks to reduce environmental pollution

March 27, 2019 by Staff News Writer

During March and April the company HP performs actions to recycle technological products. The activities include a recycling campaign for supplies, called “Reciclatón”, which promotes the recycling of used original toners, through its HP Planet Partners program.

They are also receiving printers used in partnership with Office Depot, Intcomex and Dataformas. The activity seeks to increase public attention on the importance of acquiring printing products that support the care of the environment for its characteristics such as energy savings and waste control.

During the “Reciclatón”, those who have an interest in properly disposing of their used printer, can get discounts of 20% in the purchase of a new HP Deskjet 3700 series printer in Office Depot and 50% in packages of black and color inks.

If it is a company, you could receive a special price in Intcomex or Dataformas for the purchase of several models of HP LaserJet printers.

The “Reciclatón” is part of the global program HP Planet Partners, which currently operates in Costa Rica and since 2000 has allowed to use more than 99 million kilograms of plastic from recycled cartridges in the manufacture of new ink cartridges and HP toners . Through the project, customers have returned more than 735 million cartridges to HP for further recycling.

Last February, HP showed the Latin American media the process of recycling printers and consumables at the Sorocaba, Brazil plant. The company announced that it has allied with firms such as Sinctronics to recycle printers, inkjet and laser cartridges and computers in that plant.

The objective is not only to take advantage of the largest amount of recycled material, but to reduce the carbon footprint and contribute to the environment.

The recycling center located in Brazil is unique in the continent and has the capacity to recycle different materials such as metal and plastic, the latter reconverts it into polymers that are used in new products such as printers and computer parts. For this, it has a certified laboratory and a collection network among distributors in the South American country.

HP’s goal through its sustainability strategy is to recycle up to 1.2 million tons of hardware and supplies by 2025, five times the current amount through innovation in its product portfolio, the model of market arrival and the sustainable supply chain with its Latin American partners.

Marcos Razón, general manager of HP for Latin America, believes that now everything is going towards sustainability that has an impact for business.

Nate Hurst, head of sustainability and social impact of the company, emphasizes that reducing waste is a good business and HP is helping to change the planet.

Technology can help change communities, increase the value of the stakeholders; the important thing is how the company will ensure the sustainability of the business,”

said Hurst.

Meanwhile, Kami Saidi, in charge of the company’s supply chain for Latin America, points out that they use a digital supply chain management system, which allows them to identify the toners that are recycled, which use RFID technology in alliance with Accelerate.

Randi Braunwalder, responsible for social impact in the Americas of HP, believes that the challenge is to create products with the least impact on the environment through modular design.
