Teen moms are increasing in Costa Rica

August 11, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The statistics are alarming. In Costa Rica, 34 women aged 12 years old to 17 years old are becoming mothers. It represents 13% of births in the country.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), in 2014, 12,508 children from teen moms were born worldwide.

As a result, the current government will resume a project proposed by the previous administration in order to reduce teen pregnancy.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health announced that they decided to continue with the implementation of Salud Mesoamérica Project, which focuses on preventing teen pregnancies and sex education in schools.

The second phase of this project will focus on Huetar Caribe y Brunca regions, which have lower rates of social development. This element is associated with a lower educational level and thus to higher pregnancies.
