The Border Police seized 25 horses in deplorable conditions

February 15, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Border Police seized 25 horses in deplorable conditions. They came from Nicaragua. So far this month, 41 horses have been confiscated in Los Chiles border canton. On February 6th, a truck with 16 horses and a donkey from the neighboring country was intercepted.

The animals were in terrible condition. Almost all of them were malnourished, some were blind, limped or showed wounds on their backs and other parts of the body, as well as being full of ticks and other parasites.

According to the report by Border Police director Allan Obando Flores, the first finding took place on Sunday near Mojón 11, a few meters from the border line.

In that place, several individuals, who were spurring on the 17 horses, fled to the bushed and sneaked into the darkness of the night when they noticed the police presence.

A subject failed to escape from Justice. He’s surnamed Calvo: he was intercepted in Santa Cecilia de Los Chiles. He was driving a truck with eight horses. He also came from from Nicaragua.

After verifying his judicial status, the border policemen determined that Calvo had an order of capture for issuing uncovered checks.

It is important to mention that this subject, who is from the south of the country, is the same person that was arrested on February 6th when carrying 16 horses and a donkey .

None of the horses had marks used in Los Chiles. According to what officials have observed, the type of fire-heated marks on their skin belongs to the neighboring country, so it is almost a fact that they were illegally brought from Nicaragua.

The National Animal Health Service in Los Chiles will be in charge of the animals.
