The fight against teenage pregnancy faces a new challenge

October 11, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The country is getting ready for a new challenge in the prevention of teenage pregnancies. The second phase is to work on the details for the implementation of the Mesoamérica Health project.

Mario León, coordinator of the program from the Costa Rican Department of Social Security, declared that it is too early to know how many pregnancies have been avoided, but the project is working.

Acoording to the coordinator, all the requirements that must be submitted to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will be ready this month.

In the process, they found cases of girls under 15 years old who have already had 3 pregnancies and explains that a pregnancy at this age increases the risk of death during childbirth and postpartum, and it also increases the baby’s  chances of dying during the first month of life or later.

However, from 2014 to 2015, it was reported a decrease in almost 900 cases of mothers under 19 years old.

Part of the project started with a survey conductec in the under age population in order to establish priorities. That first phase showed that 88% of sexually-active students declared that they are using contraceptions.
