The MEIC inspected fishing products

April 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Out of 100 fish stores inspected by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC), 69% of them failed to comply with labeling or price information.

The inspections were carried out from March 15th to March 21st, in 100 fish markets inside and outside the Greater Metropolitan Area.

Due to the coming Easter, the Ministry carried out a verification in the market of the labeling of fishery products, in accordance with the Technical Regulations for the Labeling of Fresh, Frozen and Thawed Fishery Products.

The study contemplated the following:

-The MEIC analyzed the labeling of the product.
-Through INCOPESCA, the fish species was analyzed to verify that the species offered to the consumer is the one that is actually being sold.

In addition to the MEIC, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) participated in this process, through the National Animal Health Service (SENASA) and the Costa Rican Fisheries and Aquaculture Institute (INCOPESCA).

Establishments involved expect to change the situation as soon as possible.
