The MINAE has not received a formal request to bring 9 Bengal tigers

March 1, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) informed that it has not received a formal request from La Ponderosa Adventure Park to bring 9 Bengal tigers to Costa Rican territory.

Through a statement, the MINAE reported that this type of import requires a SINAC authorization, as stated in Article 27 of Wildlife Conservation Law:

It is prohibited… the importation of wild life that is part of circuses, street shows, etc., to national territory when its purpose is the public exhibition of these organisms.

According to Patricia Madrigal, deputy minister of Enviroment, the current administration has made a great effort to resume the wildlife topic, which is a strategic issue for the conservation of biodiversity since it has not been adequately applied in the last administrations.

The goal is to bring the 9 felines from Nicaragua so they can live in an open space in Liberia.
